Brand MZ

How did you become attentive on the brand MZ?
I have already ridden as a small boy with my father with his MZ ES 175. When I was 15, I bought a Simson S51 and with 18 it had to be something faster. I then bought a MZ ETZ 250, which was unfortunately stolen from me in 1990. Thus was for the time being end with two-wheeler driving.

What do you like particularly well at MZ motorcycles?
The MZ motorcycles please me optically very well. Also the simple construction method I find good. One can make with some skill and technical understanding everything himself.

Your MZ ES 150

How did you come to your MZ ES 150?
In the spring of 2013 I made the decision, it has to be a MZ again. Since the spare parts prices are quite manageable, I decided on the ES 150/1. I found one and bought it at Ebay for 180 euros.

In which condition was the ES at the time of the acquisition?
Visually and technically it did not make the best impression. The sheet metal parts were rusty and partly painted over with a brush. The electrical system was very dilapidated. The ignition lock and the whole lighting were without function and the headlight was missing. There was even a battery from GDR times. With the engine it did not look better. It didn't want to run properly and stopped all the time. Measures such as a new plug, adjustment of the ignition and a carburetor cleaning brought also no improvement. Positive was that the footrests, the chrome sleeves of the shocks and the rear light of the previous owner were already replaced by new parts. To my delight I found out that it was built in 1970, just like me.

Did you have a specific concept for your project?
At the beginning I wanted to leave it in the same condition and only make it technically fit again. But when the ES was standing in the garage at home, I decided to do a complete restoration true to the original, because it needed it after all these years.

How did the restoration go? Were there any difficulties?
When I started to disassemble the ES, the first difficulties arose. The handlebars were tight and could not be loosened. With the swingarm bolts it looked no better. Everything was really stuck. With a lot of rust solvent, patience and muscle power I got everything loose. After sandblasting all parts the next shock. The frame had a deep crack at the steering head. A new frame had to be procured. An acquaintance of my father still had one lying around in his barn, I got it as a gift. The sandblasted parts were painted by myself. The assembly turned out to be quite problem-free. Then came the day of the first test run. The MZ started immediately and the engine sounded very well, only the charge control simply did not want to go out. The old regulator had probably the best days behind itself and I exchanged it then against an electronic one. After that I adjusted the carburettor and it runs without any problems until today.

How much did the rebuild cost?
I have not calculated exactly, but it will have been about 1300 Euro. I had the engine rebuilt by an engine repairer with crankshaft overhaul and cylinder grinding. In addition I had wheels with new stainless steel spokes and the sandblaster. Engine 450 Euro, wheels 70 Euro, sandblasting 80 Euro. Then I had to pay some more Euro for spare parts, the full inspection at the Dekra and the registration. And of course many working hours in the garage at home.

What do you use your MZ ES 150 for?
In good weather I ride it to work and on nice summer days I sometimes make a tour with my wife.

What was your greatest or most extraordinary experience?
When I am on the road with the MZ, people look at you sometimes and are amazed. During a break in the parking lot or at the gas station, you are also addressed again and again and reap admiring glances. Especially the older people / pensioners tell you stories from their MZ times.

Other

Are you member in a MZ club / association?
No.

Do you take part in oldtimer events?
Up to now I was with the MZ on no oldtimer event. To the Oldtema to Erfurt or Halle I always go with the car, because then bought parts can be transported better. Mostly however I lack the time, because I must work also on weekends.

Do you have any wishes, ideas, plans for the future?
At the moment I do not plan a new project, but a MZ ETZ 250 I will certainly buy. Is a beautiful memory of my youth.

Would you like to tell us something else?
Keep up the good work with your great online shop. With you one can rely on punctual delivery and good parts. You contribute to the fact that we can keep our old treasures for a long time.
