Simson fan Karsten "The swallow was a total piece of junk"

...

Name:
Karsten Boock
Place of residence:
Fredersdorf-Vogelsdorf
Model:
Simson Schwalbe KR51/2 N

How did you become aware of the brand Simson and what do you like especially?
My first moped was a KR50, then came a Schwalbe. At that time (1978) there were hardly any alternatives. What I like about Simson is the simple technology, the reliability, the economy and that after so many years of ups and downs of the brand almost all spare parts are available again. I especially appreciate the constantly growing fan community

How did you get your Schwalbe and why did you choose this particular model?
As already mentioned, the Schwalbe was one of my first vehicles. After visiting several meetings in the area, the decision was made to get one ready again. After a short search in the one-day car exchanges on the Internet, I found an offer in the vicinity.

In what condition was the moped at the time of purchase?
It was almost a total scrap heap. Except that you could push the Schwalbe with flat tires, was all without function.

What exactly did you change on the Schwalbe?
I installed a vape ignition because of the reliability. Because of road safety, the conversion was to 12 volt with turn signals. A Bing carburetor was also installed. I also always wanted a metallic paint job.

Were there any difficulties during the build? Did you do the work alone?
Actually there were no difficulties, except for the electrics. I had to get a circuit diagram. I tinkered for several hours and the light just wouldn't work. Well, the circuit is not like on a motorcycle. After a short research on the Internet, I could find the error. It was actually none, because the light works only when the engine is running. Except for the engine regeneration, the painting and the centering of the preset wheels, I did all the work alone.

How much did the rebuild cost?
Too much, but it was worth it to me! Painting 600€, engine regeneration with vape and Bing carburetor 575€, sandblasting and powder coating 440€, registration 140€ (DEKRA and road traffic office - negative notice from Flensburg, suspicion of reimport) and a lot of small parts.

What do you use your moped for?
I use the Schwalbe for trips in the city or to meetings in the closer environment.

What was your greatest or most extraordinary experience?
At a meeting I was asked why I have white turn signals and a white tail light on the otherwise so great Schwalbe, that would not be original. I answered "so that you have something to ask" and we were already talking. What is also great, are the waving people at the rides of the meetings.

Do you participate in Simson events?
Pure Simson meetings only in Bernau and the annual ride with the 2-stroke freaks. I also go to IFA and classic car meetings in Herzfelde, Finow, Paaren im Glien, Torbau, Heckelberg, etc

Do you have wishes, ideas, plans for the future regarding Simson?
The Schwalbe is finished according to my ideas. I still have a MZ ETZ 250 team that I use for the winter. There are still some improvements to be made.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
TOP spare parts supply and super fast delivery. Keep up the good work.

    Sieht ja echt super aus!
Wie heißt denn die RAL der Lackierung . Ich bau auch gerade eine KR51/2 E auf, die war auch in solch einem desolaten Zustand!

Lieben Gruß aus Lampertswalde bei Großenhain.
