PART I: Johannes and his project Budabroad - A short preliminary interview

Greetings Johannes. You contacted us some time ago and presented your media project "BudaBroad". We found your project very exciting. Tell us a little bit about it.

It all started when I decided to spend a semester abroad in Budapest. As a media student at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences, I am required to accompany and promote this stay through the media, so this was an opportunity for me to combine duty and passion. In addition, I find the normal means of transport for longer distances quite boring and travelling by moped gives you more of an opportunity to consciously perceive your environment.

Now, a few weeks later, the plans are slowly taking shape, the route is ready and the excitement is rising - after all, the most I've ever done with the moped is to go to an interview for civilian service in Dresden, 70km away.

How did your family react to your plan and what did your fellow students say about it?

As expected, my parents rolled their eyes, smirked and thought the idea was a flash in the pan. When I repeatedly mentioned that I wanted to go to Budapest by moped, my father only said to my mother "the boy is old enough and will know what he is doing".

The idea regularly caused astonished faces among fellow students. Most of my fellow students are relatively used to travelling to the cities of the partner universities and probably prefer to keep the additional stress at bay. However, I find that the project and the extra effort can help me in many ways, both professionally and personally in dealing with the people I meet.

It's not long now until the launch in mid-August. How did the preparations go? What has been done and what is still to be done?

At the moment I have quite a lot on my plate: Exams have to be written, the move has to be prepared and videos have to be pre-produced. For this reason I was able to ask the passionate hobby mechanics "GZV Karl-Marx-Stadt" for help with the preparations of the Schwalbe and the trailer. They helped me with the installation of the new parts for only 1 beer/hour (;)) - without this support this trip wouldn't work.
Otherwise, the timing looks relatively good, so hopefully I'll have some time for family and friends before we start on August 19th.

Do you have a checklist for us, what should be checked before such a trip on the moped? What spare parts & tools should you take with you?

Johannes at AKF in Bautzen - Budabroad

PART II: Kickstart on 08/19/2017

On Saturday, the 19.08. it finally started! Johannes set off on his journey to Budapest. A few friends and Budaboard interested people came to the "Kickstart" to accompany the first miles on his start into his semester abroad. We wish a good journey!

PART III: Budabroad - travel summary

Johannes sent us an exclusive summary of his trip to Budapest - and of course we don't want to withhold it from you.

At the beginning of every moped trip is - right, the kickstart. Concerning my tour from Chemnitz to Budapest, I put this on the 19th of August and looked for me, for the first stage up to the Czech border, travel and funny companions, who had Bock on rattling. With 12 mopeds we drove east and I could almost smell the Hungarian Kolbász soup - a successful start.

From the second day on alone on the road, we should reach the Hungarian capital via Prague, Brno and Bratislava within 10 days. For many this is certainly not a high art, but who is already comfortably on the road with the 50 cubic 2-stroke under the butt, should not miss to devote a little more time to the beautiful towns and the landscape, these have it quite in itself.

Beautiful low mountain regions, nature reserves and lakes invite to small side trips or coffee breaks and especially Brno has made me as a 350,000 inhabitants city a very fresh and lively impression, without (as the larger cities) to seem overwhelming. Due to my schedule, I had an extra day stay in each of the cities, which I mostly used to explore the city and take photos.

I booked hostels about 2 days in advance, 10-15€ per night was a solid average by my standards and cleanliness and comfort of the accommodations were mostly in the "dust-is-in-the-corners-but-the-floor-is-clean" range. For sure, in 6-10 bed rooms you have to accept a certain restriction of privacy, but in return you often make new acquaintances with whom you can wander through the city or have a relaxed beer in the evening.

Margarethe, my billiard green two-wheeled lady, purred like a kitten from the first to the last kilometre. No problems with the ignition, no breakdown and even under longer full load passages uphill she was steadfast like the defense of the Italian national team. Prepared I was for a few problem cases (Bowden cable tear, spare wheel insert, light set), but I was also not disappointed that my hands were allowed to stay clean. For this reason, a well-prepared drivable is the best preparation for a relaxed travel experience. Apart from the brief loss of my 5-litre canister due to inadequate load securing, there were no incidents, but in poor road quality (can happen eastwards ;)) it is essential to pay attention to the appropriate speed. Potholes could have almost cost me a rim in one case or another.

After 9 days, 910km distance, 53,15€ fuel costs, 945ml mixed oil and many experiences and encounters I finally arrived in Budapest on August 28th. The last sections in the Danube bend were a perfect scenic end to this trip and at the latest when I crossed the Margaret Bridge in Budapest for the first time and thought about the last days, I knew that no way is too far for a Simson and that this way of getting around is the most beautiful, despite the pain in my buttocks

PART IV: Living & Studying in Budapest

We received greetings from Johannes and Margarethe from Budapest. They have been in Budapest since the end of August and have settled in quite well. Among other things they talk about "exciting biotopic changes of the environment" ;)

With his flat-sharing community "The Garay Ter minators" Johannes has done well. The four flatmates of his old building flat-sharing community in the Garay ter district are quite easy-going. Communication is easier than expected. This is due to the fact that almost all of them come from German-speaking countries. But Johannes would have been happy about a little more internationality and cultural exchange. His room does not differ noticeably from a typical student accommodation in Germany - simple and cheap. Nevertheless, a "stroke of luck", as he says himself.

Not only Johannes, but also Margarethe has explored her new territory in the meantime - only in good weather, of course. On their tours, the two have also spotted other Simson riders and received admiring glances from passers-by. That's also how they got to know Agoston, who runs his own moped blog.

Since riding a moped in big city traffic is quite stressful in the long run, Johannes uses public transport for the most part - including for his trips to the university, the Metropolitan University. After the Welcome Day with all the newcomers, the semester schedule is quite practical and creative with drawing courses, workshops, lectures on media philosophy and art history. Boredom is certainly not an issue.

Johannes uses his free time for moped tours with Margarethe, walks, trips to sights and of course pub visits with fellow students. Budapest has a lot to offer and with every day Johannes gets to know the city a bit better..
