My buddy Andy is originally from Dresden and owns a Schwalbe KR51/2. This stood unused in the garage for about 4 years. When he moved to Duisburg, he took the Schwalbe with him. Since I always liked to work on cars, motorcycles and mopeds he asked if I would help him to get the Schwalbe running again. I was immediately with it. The first check was a bit sobering:
- defective tires
- leaking & gummed up carburettor
- rusty tank
- clogged fuel filter
- cracked chain case
- oily spark plug
- porous ignition cable and cracked clutch cable
Despite the defects there was a spark when starting. According to this the alternator and ignition coil were okay. Necessary spare parts were ordered, everything was installed, the carburetor was thoroughly cleaned, new gear oil was filled in and the thing started! We were overjoyed to get a number plate and took turns driving around for hours (together we are unfortunately too heavy for a Schwalbe ;-) ).
The prelude to my own Schwalbe
Andy asked me what I thought of the Schwalbe. Up to now I have only ridden Piaggio TPH etc.. I must confess honestly that I was totally enthusiastic. Just because the thing drove over 60 km/h without tuning and made such a great rattling sound while driving. He said that he still had an almost complete Schwalbe, which was actually intended as a parts donor. He would give it to me under one condition - I must never sell the Schwalbe! I immediately agreed.
The inventory:
- Tires & rims defective
- Ignition coil defective
- Seat broken
- Cable tangle of the finest
- Speedometer cable missing
- Tank completely rusted
- Shock absorber without function
- Engine leaking
- all rubber parts porous
- Turn signal broken off
My first thought was: scrap metal. After I have made myself a little smarter on the Internet about Simson and especially the Schwalbe, it did not take long until I came across AKF. My decision was made: The project to rebuild the Schwalbe was started.
First of all the bike had to be disassembled. The frame, the fairing parts, swingarms and fork were sandblasted. The engine was sealed and brushed. The aluminium parts were also brushed and painted. For the paint job I chose RAL 7015 slate grey. Powder coating with two layers.
When the spare parts ordered from you arrived, I put everything together for a test.
A little later it was ready and perfect for me. She runs like clockwork and will definitely become heirloom.
The engine was also completely overhauled with a new crankshaft and new bearings. Since that worked out so well, I also overhauled Andy's engine right away.
Andy and I ride together more often now. Riding a Schwalbe is just indescribable!
Super
Sehr schick das Moped und nach meinen Vorstellungen. Würde gern die Teileliste für den Aufbau erfahren wollen. VG Martin
