Brand Simson

How did you become aware of the Simson brand?
An acquaintance had sold several Simson in large numbers after the reunification and thus caught my attention. Before that I didn't even know the Simson brand.

What do you particularly like about Simson?
The simple, solid construction!

Your Simson

How did you get your SR2?
I had bought my moped from the already mentioned acquaintances, because I found it simply beautiful and above all cheap. Another important point was the completeness, because no part was missing.

Does your Simson moped have a name?
No.

In which condition was the SR2 at the time of the purchase?
Although the moped had a shelter, it was rusted. This however completely and evenly, as if the color was not in order, so that it looked already almost beautiful again. In addition the ignition was defective. Then it stood for over 20 years on the attic of my father and finally with me in the boiler room. But before that I had oiled it and thus preserved it, so that it survived the time.

What exactly did you change?
My goal was to restore the moped as original as possible. Since I had once been to the Simson Museum in Suhl, I was able to take a lot of photos to meet this goal. First I had all parts blasted and then painted and lined them myself. Then I had the wheels newly spoked and new tires mounted. Since I wanted to exclude possible new error sources in the future, I installed a Vape ignition system.

Were there any difficulties with the conversion?
Since I am already professionally in this field, there were hardly any problems. Nevertheless the painting and lining was not so easy. Some colors did not match and were of inferior quality, so they started to crack. So I had to paint some parts several times to make it look good. I had done all the work on my own. Except for the blasting of the parts, there I lacked the possibilities.

How much did the rebuild cost?
About 600€. The most expensive things were the ignition and the paint.

What do you use your moped for?
Normally I go with my moped on oldtimer meetings, club meetings or trips. If the opportunity arises, I also ride it to work.

What was your greatest or most extraordinary experience?
The most beautiful was the trip to the last Bockhorn oldtimer meeting. Because the model-typical intake noise is extremely loud, a lot of people I passed looked behind me. Even those who drove together with me had to keep a certain distance so that it wouldn't get too loud.

Other

Are you a member of a Simson club / association?
I am a member of the Düsenjäger Mopedclub

Do you take part in Simson events?
Unfortunately not directly at Simson meetings, because of the residential situation the journeys would be too far.

Do you have wishes, ideas, plans for the future concerning Simson?
On the whole I am happy with my SR2. Nevertheless, I wish myself in the long run a new exhaust, because with the present one the chrome is damaged and I have only painted over it. Currently, I am restoring a MZ TS 150 and wish that everything goes smoothly.
