Bakelite is a phenolic resin-based thermosetting plastic and was discovered in 1905 by a chemist and named after him. The heat-stable Phenolplast material Bakelite was the first industrially produced plastic. Bakelite molded parts are made in a heated form by molding and curing a phenolic/filler mixture. After cooling and hardening of the plastic, it is resistant to mechanical influences, heat and acids. In contrast to thermoplastics (e.g. PVC), bakelite cannot be deformed again by heating. Bakelite always has dark, brown to black shades and darkens in light. The pressing compounds usually contain various aggregate materials, such as rock flour or textile fibers.
